week 9

week 9 assignment 3
The Qualitative Reading Inventory-5 (QRI-5) is an individually administered informal reading inventory designed to provide information about conditions under which students can identify words and comprehend text successfully. The qRI-5 is used to assess students from grades K-12. the QRI-5 can be used to provide valuable diagnostic information. This information helps the teacher to estimate reading levels to group the students for literacy activities. The QRI-5 can also lead the teacher on to which intervention process she should follow.
The Dibels is a literacy assessment too. It is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of a set of K-6 literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As opposed to The QRI-5 which is there to determine students basic levels in their literacy skills Dibels is used to screen for whether students are at risk of reading difficulty and not keeping up to the grades bench mark, to monitor student progress, and guide instruction. The Dibels test give the students just a minute to answer and are done at the three benchmarks of the year. Those students that are found to be at risk are assessed often to see progress.
I would use both forms of assessments in my classroom. The Dibels will help me determine if students are keeping up in my class and the QRI-5 would give me more of a comprehensive view on where exactly my students are holding.

  1. Great explanation! I too, think it would be beneficial to use both kinds of assessments in the classroom, the DIBELS for quick screening and QRI for a broader picture of where my students are holding.
