week 7

week 7 assignment 5
I assessed Ricky Knofler a six year old English language learner in her print awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics and fluency to get a clear grasp on where she is holding in her literacy skills.
I began by asking her questions assessing her print awareness. I asked her to point out to me,
  • The front of the book
  • The title of the book
  • Where you should begin reading
  • A letter
  • A word
  • The first word of a sentence
  • The last word of a sentence
  • The first and last word on a page
  • Punctuation marks
  • A capital letter
  • A lowercase letter
  • The back of the book
she scored perfectly on this short print awareness assessment.
I then assessed her phonemic and phonological awareness by having her name the letters and sounds in a story. She did perfectly I tried having her count the syllables of words in a sentence asking  her to segment the words by their syllables yet that was too hard. I hope to work on her phonological awareness by the ideas given on reading rockets. begin by having her count the words and then teach how to count the syllables.
I assessed her phonics by having her combine letters to make sounds. She did well on the single letter graphemes and digraphs. she was able to read simple words accurately. I would like to do the phonics activities with her found on the starfall website. The activities are simple, fun and really effective.
I assessed her fluency by doing a WPM she scored pretty bad on that. She was only able to read a couple words in minute. I feel like I should focus on perfect her phonics skills and phonemic awareness and that will greatly enhance her fluency level. l will also read to her and have her repeat after me familiarizing her with more words.
I would also suggest to her the websites alpha writer which is great for phonics skills and storyline online to enhance fluency.

Comments

  1. Great Chaya. I would also begin working on her phonemic awareness skills and phonics before deciding an intervention for fluency!

  2. Your assessment seems great, Chaya! I noticed how many students scored 100% on the first part of the assessment. I guess it's pretty basic for a student this age to know that information.
